And what was my personal surprise that even the strong and successful, talented and intelligent people have a question about “self-esteem .” If we knew how important it is, we would probably be more attentive to ourselves, our family, and those around us.
In my subjective opinion, it’s better to have an overestimated self-esteem than an underestimated one, although common sense should be used in everything.
Remember that every thought we have affects us, our state and our actions. Remember that our words affect people and often leave a great impact. Be attentive to yourself and those who are in your space. Because saying something is not difficult, but what consequence it will have we often do not know…

Self-esteem is what a child thinks about themselves and how they evaluate themselves.
People with healthy self-esteem accept themselves and are aware of their strengths and weaknesses. They treat themselves as valuable people and believe in their own abilities. When completing tasks, they take responsibility for their actions. They are friendly towards other people and have good relationships with those around them. They do not try to dominate others. Such people are curious about the world, emotionally balanced, rational and ready to cooperate with others.
How to know if your self-esteem is healthy
The image of a person who feels good about themselves, thinks rationally about themselves, and has self-esteem consists of many different traits. Healthy self-esteem can be recognized by:
- in a manner of speaking and moving that reveals the joy of being alive;
- in the ease of talking about achievements and failures with simplicity and honesty, because a person remains on friendly terms with facts;
- in the ease of expressing and receiving compliments, warm feelings, and gratitude;
- in openness to criticism and easy recognition of mistakes, since self-esteem is not related to the perception of oneself as “ideal”;
- in the ease and spontaneity of expressions and movements, which means that a person lives in harmony with himself;
- in harmony between what someone says, does, how they look, how they move, how a child’s voice sounds;
- in terms of openness and curiosity about new ideas, new experiences, new life opportunities;
- in that feelings of fear or uncertainty, even if they appear, do not frighten the student or overwhelm him, because accepting them, controlling them, and rising above them often seems impossible;
- in the ability to laugh at humorous aspects of one’s own and others’ lives, in the ease of assertive behavior and acceptance of the assertiveness of others;
- in the ability to maintain harmony and dignity in the face of stress.
Self-esteem can also be recognized by observing physical characteristics such as:
- lively and sparkling eyes; rested face with natural color and healthy skin;
- naturally held chin, corresponding to body posture, relaxed jaw;
- relaxed but straightened shoulders, relaxed and freely positioned hands, arms hanging naturally;
- not tense, straight, balanced body posture; a step expressing a goal;
- voice intensity adapted to the situation and careful pronunciation.
How to recognize low or high self-esteem

Self-esteem can be high, low, or normal (healthy). The most beneficial thing for a child is to develop a healthy sense of self-worth.
A person with low self-esteem does not accept himself and is very sensitive to criticism from other people. He often feels anxiety and emotional tension, as well as feelings of hopelessness and unhappiness. He has a tendency to self-destructive behavior. He is often overly self-analytical, lacks determination, easily becomes depressed and embarrassed. He very often strives for perfection. In class, he usually takes a distant position and keeps his distance from other people, seeking solitude. He is often critical of others and treats them with suspicion.
A person with high self-esteem is confident in his uniqueness and “greatness”. However, because of this, he experiences numerous disappointments, and when something does not work out for him, he abandons the things he has started. Such a student gets bored very quickly and tends to put things off until the last moment. In a dangerous situation, his mental stability often decreases. This type of person is overly controlling and is often dishonest with others or himself. He also has a tendency to self-destructive behavior. He is not popular in the group and is considered a conflicted person who does not care about the opinions of others.
How to help your child work on improving self-esteem
A parent who wants to help their children develop a healthy sense of self-esteem must make sure they are aware of the traits and behaviors that are their resources, as well as those they need to work on.
The development of healthy self-esteem in students is promoted by:
1 – teach them to identify their strengths (the so-called “Me Today”) .
2 – teach them to create their own personality and their own actions (the so-called “Me in the future”).
3 – assistance in forming skills and making choices for self-realization in the future (determining lifestyle, value system, etc.). The program for building healthy self-esteem can be used by teachers, for example, in lessons.
